Manchester United staff reportedly met with Spanish club Getafe to discuss the future of their loanee Mason Greenwood, reported MARCA on Tuesday.
United Sporting Director John Murtough and Negotiator Matt Hargreaves were in Barcelona where they met with the club's Sporting Director Deco to discuss the potential signing of Greenwood after which they travelled south of the city to meet with Getafe???s officials.
Getafe have publicly stated that they aim to keep the English international for at least one more season and United have set a €50m signing price, which the Spanish club would be unlikely to offer.
The 22-year-old has already been linked with FC Barcelona and with Altetico’s growing interest in acquiring his services, it is likely that the English international will be continuing his career in the Spanish league.
Remember, Getafe???s president Angel Torres named FC Barcelona an “ideal” fit for the left-footed forward.
“He is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year,” Torres said to the Spanish radio station COPE. “It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.
“In Spain, he has a market. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me.”
It must be noted that United confirmed in August 2023 that Greenwood will not be continuing his career with them after a six-and-a-half-month investigation.
Even though the English club gave a clean chit to the player after their investigation, the internal conflict and the backlash from the fans forced the club to part ways with the 22-year-old.
Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape after his then-girlfriend Harriet Robson posted her pictures and an audio file on social media.
The footballer was then immediately suspended from training and matches by the club and last played for The Red Devils against West Ham in January 2022.
Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with the player, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its FIFA 22 game following his arrest.
But in February 2023, charges of attempted rape and assault against Mason Greenwood were dropped by the prosecutor.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light were factors in their decision to stop the case against the 22-year-old.
